DIRTY HARRY ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION

Published June 21, 2008

Clint Eastwood — actor, director, producer, mayor, and one of the few movie stars to have created more than one iconic character in his career. While many of those icons wore cowboys hats and rode horses, arguable his most indelible role was of Inspector Harry Callahan of the SFPD. Harry speaks softly, packs a big gun, hates bureaucracy, is quick with a one-liner, and has a little problem with authority … no wonder I think he’s so cool.

In five films over 17 years, Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool, Harry made his mark not only in popular culture, but in our vernacular. Catchphrases come and go, but Harry gave us quite few:

You’ve got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky?

A man’s got to know his limitations.

Swell.

Marvelous.

Go ahead, make my day.

You’re shit out of luck.

In 1971, some critics called Harry a nihilistic Nazi, an out-of-control vigilante with a badge. While its immediate sequel confronted this charge head on by making the bad guys cops who were literally an assassination squad, another look at the series makes this fascist comparison ridiculous. Harry is not a Nazi, and he does absolutely have a moral code. But when bureaucracy stands in the way of justice, he will at all costs make things right. Harry Callahan isn’t all that different from The Man With No Name from Leone’s Dollars Trilogy. Even in 20th Century San Francisco, Harry Callahan is the Lone Gunslinger come to dole out justice when nobody else will.
